3 Ways to the Concert Association

How does one get to the Concert Association? Like a well known music joke would say: "practice, practice and once again practice!" However there are three easier ways: per mail, telephone, or Internet.

You can join the Concert Association of the Vienna State Opera Chorus on three different ways. Either as full member, substitute or sponsor. This is how it works:

How to become a full member

You are automatically a full member of the Concert Association if you become solidly engaged in the choir of the Vienna State Opera.
Audition requirements:
Required are a level of a completed singing education and sightreading. To prepare for the audition, are: one compulsory aria and two of your own choice, at least one of them in Italian or French; predetermined choir pieces (details for the different voice-groups see below).

1st & 2nd Tenor:
Compulsory aria: Die Zauberflöte (Mozart), Tamino (Dies Bildnis)

Choir pieces: Fidelio (Beethoven), 2nd finale till the end of the opera (Heil sei dem Tag); La Traviata (Verdi), 3rd act Matadores (Di Madride); Carmen (Bizet), 3rd act, 2nd scene, No.24 (A deux quartos) and No.25 (Les voici la quadrille).

1st Bass:
Compulsory aria: Fidelio (Beethoven), Pizzarro (Ha, welch ein Augenblick), or Faust (Gounod), Valentin´s prayer.

Choir pieces: Fidelio (Beethoven), 2nd finale till the end of the opera (Heil sei dem Tag); La Traviata (Verdi), 3rd act Matadores (Di Madride); Carmen (Bizet), 3rd act, 2nd scene, No.24 (A deux quartos) and No.25 (Les voici la quadrille).

2nd Bass:

Choir pieces: Fidelio (Beethoven), 2nd finale till the end of the opera (Heil sei dem Tag); La Traviata (Verdi), 3rd act Matadores (Di Madride); Carmen (Bizet), 3rd act, 2nd scene, No.24 (A deux quartos) and No.25 (Les voici la quadrille); 2nd symphony (Mahler), beginning of the choir (Auferstehn).

How to become a Substitute

The Concert Association engages choir members only for individual projects (this could be concerts, CD recordings or opera productions at the Salzburg Festival).
Audition requirements:
At least two arias of your choice. Since the CA isn't only a pure concert choir, but also have to manage a great amount of scenic tasks, it goes without saying that the pleasure of acting is an essential requirement.

How to become a Sponsor

Whoever supports the choir of the Concert Association (with an annual minimum-contribution of € 20, -) can consider themself one of the sponsors of the choir on the one hand and on the other enjoy some privileges, for example acquiring tickets for performances of the Concert Asociation (as far as possible) in advanced booking. Furthermore, every sponser gets a little Chrismas present.
