Prof. Balatsch
Professor Norbert Balatsch, 1952-1968 member of the Vienna State Opera Chorus; 1953-1983 head of the Wiener Männergesang-Verein; 1960-1962 executive director of the Concert Association; 1968-1983 Chorus-Master of the Vienne State Opera Chorus; 1972-1999 Chorus-Master of the Bayreuth Festival; since 1983 chief of the Chores Santa Cecilia di Roma and conductor of numerous international orchestras; 1999-2001 head of the Viennese Boys Choir.

Professor Balatsch was Chorus-Master of the Vienna State Opera Chorus for 15 years. In this time he rehearsed more operas with the choir than any of his colleagues. One of the most difficult works for choir, Schönbergs 12-tone opera MOSES UND ARON, in a record time of only 12 months.

Hundred- Headed
1937 Hans Knappertsbusch (1888-1965) conducted the MATTHÄUS - PASSION of Johann Sebastian Bach with the choir of the Concert Association.

In his enthusiasm over the qualities of the choir, Knappertsbusch (photo) jokingly nominated the choir to "hundred-headed Kammersänger". The correct title for each member should then be Kammer-"Choir"-Sänger.

Digital- Era
Herbert von Karajan was one of the first to record operas with the new, at that time, digital recording technique and contributed to a completely new hearing experience.

In 1982 Karajan recorded TURANDOT in the Vienna Musikverein with Placido Domingo, Katia Ricciarelli, Ruggero Raimondi and the CA, who had the pleasure of participating in one of the first digital recorded CDs.

Radio- Tip
The Vienna classic radio-station RADIO STEPHANSDOM dedicated six Sunday programs in 2004 to the Concert Association of the Vienna State Opera Chorus where, with studio-guests, all pros and cons where discussed of being a professional choir singer.

In addition seven operas where transmitted in which the choir played an important part. This was done to place the choir in its rightful position from out the shade of soloists and conductors.
Here you can see some video- and newspaperclips of the chorus aswell as two anecdotes:

Substitute
For example at the Salzburg Festival, where several productions run parallel, the CA can't manage everything with only the normal choir. Therefore substitutes are called for, selected after an audition, to reinforce the choir.

Since the CA isn't only a pure concert choir, but also have to manage a great amount of scenic tasks (photo), it goes without saying that the pleasure of acting is an essential requirement.
